Graphic Narative evaluation

In this project what inspired me where two comics, and one web comic, known as Ava's daemon, Monstress, and Wayward. The reason they inspired me is the art style is unique for each one, Monstress being almost steampunk, art decor  and dark, Ava's daemon using bright colors but also some dark to make atmosphere, and Wayward is almost a  mystery the art style is like Ava's daemon in the way of the bright colors but using moody colors to set the tone but the drawing are a lot more detailed and very visually pleasing.

I was also inspired by story each one had, I see them all to be similar in some way but also very different. There all fantasy settings but the stories vary, Monstress is about a girl called Maika who is risking everything to control a tremendous amount of power, which will place her in the center of a devastating war between humans and and otherworldly forces and Kaiju.

Ava's daemon is a comic that  follows the main character Ava Ire  a young girl that has a demon urging her to commit suicide  her entire life.  When Ava learns the true motives of the demon, she takes on a mission from her to get a second chance at life.
Wayward is about a girl called Rori Lane who i s trying to start a new life in Japan where she reunites with her mother, but there are ancient creatures lurking in the shadows of Tokyo, and she can sense something within herself, which is threatening everything she holds dear.

The technical methods that I used in this project where mostly in 3D'S Max, and a few textures in Photoshop. In Photoshop  I used techniques like noise displacement maps, Alpha channels, clouds, and altering lighting effects to help make the textures, this was what I used to make most of the textures.

In 3D'S Max I used techniques like adjusting lengths and widths so they where to the correct size. I also used select vertex which helped me make jagged edges, other techniques, where Boolean, subtract, and camper.
The methods I used where successful, like everything you have to take your time to learn how to use and go through trial and error, to make sure everything is positioned correctly and nothing has messed up, It can get irritating and sometimes I wanted to give up but instead I just took breaks did other stuff, and then reviewed what could of gone wrong, The chalice is one of the  objects that caused the most problems.

The narrative techniques I used to convey the story was a variation of the story of certain Gods, that we wrote using facts  we found out to make it as accurate as possible, I originally wanted to make the graphic narrative part to be little comic strips, but me and my teammates are A) not the greatest drawers, we can draw but not that well, and B) time constraints It would of taken a lot of time to do and we did not have time. As an alternative method we used books and put the writing in them which just told the story we had wrote, with a image in the book which related to the God.
I think the method was successful but as I said before I would of preferred more detail, and not just a chunk of text, because people might find it boring.

To compare my work to a professional, I have used the same software, the same techniques and experienced emotion they would feel like success when something goes write and, annoyance when it goes wrong or breaks so you have to start all over again the only difference between, me and a professional is age, time, and experience, which can all be obtained by practicing, improving, and trial and error.

Breaking things

In today's lesson I had to make a model of a bit of the trident that would of broken off.

I did this by deleting everything but one spike on the trident model. I then went and got a box and gave it 25 length and width sections, I then adjusted it to the size of the trident cylinder so I could have it at he correct size.
trident spike before it's broken
I then put the box into edit mesh and then selected vertex where I then pulled them all out individually. so it looked rugged and broken.

After that I then used boolean to subtract the box from the cylinder to have the broken effect.

Railing

For the railing I separated them into three different categories, The main post, the beam and the support post.

I then went and decided how many sections there where on each group. For the main post I looked at how many boxes it might take to make it and decided on 7 so I could but some design into it. For the beam it was one rectangle which would be shaped to look nice. and then the supporting posts where just going to be rectangles, simple.

looks something like this.

To make the indented bits that make the design I just selected a rectangle gave it 3 segment and then used camper to select the section I wanted to shrink the used the size tool to shrink it.
When I showed this to Mitch he said he wanted to change the banister design completely so it was a chain barrier instead of a wooden banister. So I duplicated the post and put on the other side I then used the torus shape to make a ring and coupled them together to make a chain which linked together from one post to the other.

Rooms

In the lesson I made the main room and the side rooms for the unreal world so Mitch could set things up.

I created both the main room and side rooms using a tube which we made sure where both to the same measurements in height. With the side room it was just a simple cylinder which  I then put a a cube in and used boolean to cut out the section so it had an entrance into it.

With the main room I did the exact same thing as I did with the side room, but instead of using boolean I used pro boolean which allows for multiple sections to be selected and cut out.

Main room

The main room may look weird but when it attaches to the other rooms it should hopefully look really good and impressive.

God symbols

In today's lesson I did the last of the god symbols in Photoshop using the pen tool, eraser tool, and shape tool, and using my drawing tablet.

pillar

In class today and yesterday I made a pillar, which we made in 3ds max using bevel, camper, edit poly, and other stuff. I started off with a cylinder and two different sized boxes. With the cylinder I wanted to make them look like pillars from the Greek times.
I also added more height sections.

I used the vertex tool, the camper tool and over tools that I can't remember the name of at the minute.  I also selected the top section of the pillar and rotated in 20 degrees which slanted the indented bits of the pillar.

To do the boxes on top I just made it a 3 height segments, and went on to edit poly and selected the entire middle section and then used camper on it to push it inwards so the was an over and under hang.

3D and drawing

In today's lesson I made the trident we are going to use for Poseidon shrine, and crossed them over each other so they where like a coat of arms.

I also did the sketches for the Greek god symbols and neatened them up so they look nice.

Chalice

In the lesson I decide to start on the 3D Modeling for the game by starting of with the Chalice.

I made on chalice on Saturday after work and around about the time of Midnight.

I also then made one following a tutorial at college today which looks decent.

I think the first one looks better but others say the second one is better so I decided to use that one (hahahha).

Part one of the script.

The Story of Mythos.

Start at the begging of the map with the Intro and one gate that will lead to a small opening which would have ten different paths that would lead to a room of a god which you would have a task to complete and then move on to fix the next one. Each god will have a book but they will not be in the right place as they could be in different rooms which would cause a disruption within the gods and cause them to become very ill.

Each god will have a story you can either listen to and or skip but miss a huge amount of the story and then not be able to fix the problems within the game, if you do this you get the chance to re listen to what the story is but with a cost. The cost of this mistake would be to be chased around by a sort of shadow and you will have a time limit for how long it will take for it to find you. You can choose to make up for you miss play by having to start again but if you do this you will have to lose time within this but one of the books randomly moves somewhere and you’ll have to find it but if you do this you will have to do this book last as it is the only way to do this.

Another way the game can plan out is if you make it so that you can move around and read the books and then you come across a missing page, your task would be to find it within the world and return it but the pages will not have any obvious signs so you would have to take it along and see if it fits but the problem is as soon as the page doesn’t fit it goes back to where it was in the beginning and then you would have to go and look for the right one, also the doors would only open at one a time so that you cannot rush along you will have to put work into finding them with possible fighting off something in the shadows but this little bit would be something that would be if I have time to try and import it into the game.

At the beginning you shall hear a voice that speaks saying;
Thou who enter the world, shall be put to the test of the gods. The job ye seek will have to be taken with courage and confidence as ye must fix the life of the gods. Within ye time the gods have faded into the darkness of thou soul and therefore have to take the time to fix the wrong. Please follower of the gods save them from vanishing ye must hurry before time runs out, if thou does not make the time it will be over and never be able to be put back onto the right path and other followers will lose faith and turn to the wrong path. Good bye for now ye shall hear my voice at the end of ye time in this realm good luck…

Adobe fuse

In today's lesson i played around with Adobe fuse to try and make a main protagonist that the group might like because they are both away doing other things. So i decided to make a male model for the main character as I don't know what they want them to look like. The ideas I have created might be kept or they might be changed to fit the others idea of the character.

Adobe fuse Is a software that gives you a human body which you allows you to choose everything from race, gender, and the un-dead (got to appreciate the living dead).

Once you have the basic outline you can customize the entire body with the smallest details. like how you want the teeth to look, and if they are the hulk or a match stick.

Then you can let your fashionable side come out a choose what clothes you want them to where and what facial hair they might want.

Last but not least like the clothes but not the color or design don't worry you  can change that as well.

So you can make a decent looking human or make a monstrosity (What I did as soon as I found out about all the options).

Facial expressions and face maths

When drawing facial expressions you don't need much detail all the time, but it is still good to have detail. Using a few lines (wrinkles to show more expression on the face ) I f you where to remove the wrinkles the face would look a bit plane, sometimes though the lines could make the face look old and when your trying to draw a younger character it might not look so you might have to find a way to alter the face so it still shows the expression but makes it look the right age.

Face math is when you add to facial expressions together shown on the top  page of the sketch book using the faces of happiness and fear to create a new expression.
